‘Why her?’ Sophie asks, grabbing Laura’s palm as she mops up the spilt tea.

‘Ouch, you are hurting me!’ Laura screeches, yanking her arm away from Sophie.

‘She was one of the nicest people we’ve ever had in here. Why would she go in that way?’ Sophie asks again.

‘Who knows! Maybe the monster was actually there for you,’ Laura teases. She sticks her tongue out mischievously before bursting into giggles, clearly finding Sophie’s seriousness amusing. ‘Got to go; my break is over,’ she says and slips out of the room.

Alone in the staffroom, Sophie sits, mulling over Doris’ last moments. Was Laura right, and she is just being silly? Was the dark presence she felt earlier in the room a complete fabrication of her mind? Suddenly, the room feels unnaturally cold, sending shivers down Sophie’s spine. The same look of dread that she saw on Doris’ face imprints on her own features.

‘No… Please, no, I don’t want to go with you!’ Sophie whispers, alarmed at the empty space in front of her.
